Castello di Malcesine

Lake Garda, Italy

The Scaliger Castle of Malcesine, located on the northeastern shore of Lake Garda in the province of Verona, has undergone a stunning lighting transformation. This iconic site, which has been defined as one of the six most beautiful manors in Italy, now shines with a new lighting scheme designed to further enhance its historical and architectural beauty.

The castle, which serves as a home to museums, theatre performances, public cultural events, private ceremonies, and is a favored national and international tourist destination, now boasts a lighting system that aligns with both its cultural significance and sustainability goals.
Elettroservice S.r.l, one of Helvarā€™s trusted partners in Italy, was responsible for the integration and management of the lighting control solutions.
The challengeĀ
The primary challenge for the lighting design team was to bring out the architectural features of the Scaliger Castle of Malcesine while ensuring that energy consumption was minimised. The project aimed to balance aesthetic beauty with sustainability, creating an energy-efficient lighting solution that would highlight the historic aspects of the site without contributing to unnecessary energy use. This was especially important in light of the castle’s dual purpose as both a cultural landmark and a popular tourist destination.
Lighting Control Solution
The solution implemented at the Scaliger Castle of Malcesine incorporates Helvar’s DALI Type-8 protocol, allowing for precise, dynamic lighting control across the entire site, optimising energy use while ensuring the castleā€™s lighting meets the functional needs of its diverse activities. Additionally, the entire lighting system can be remotely managed for real-time modifications, allowing settings to be adjusted instantly based on event requirements or changing environmental conditions.
Helvarā€™s advanced products form the backbone of this system, including the 905 Router for managing DALI signals, Input 444 and Input 942 for integrating multiple control points across the castle, and the Pushbutton 939 for user-friendly scene adjustments. The 8801 central controller optimises the overall system, while the 494 and 492 relays ensure reliable operation by managing high-power lighting loads. Together, these components provide both the flexibility and energy efficiency needed for the castle’s varied events and spaces.
