Intelligent Lighting Control at the Sports and Rehabilitation Centre of the Medical University of Warsaw

The Medical University of Warsaw is a modern academic center with over 200 years of history. As Poland’s largest medical university, it educates over 9,000 students from around the world. Since 2015, the university has boasted the most state-of-the-art sports and rehabilitation facility in Warsaw. Its outstanding architecture makes it one of the most compelling landmarks on the city map. The entire project was developed in strict accordance with sustainable development principles, necessitating the implementation of advanced technological infrastructure to support such a diverse and demanding environment.

The greatest challenge—and ultimately the greatest success—of this facility is its exceptional multifunctionality. It required a system capable of seamlessly meeting the demands of an Olympic-size swimming pool, smaller fitness studios, and a vast sports hall alike. The implemented solutions allow for flexible adjustment of the space and lighting scenes to suit the dynamic needs of students and athletes, all while ensuring maximum energy efficiency.

The Solution

To meet the diverse requirements of such an extensive complex, an advanced, intelligent lighting control system was implemented. At the heart of this installation are scalable solutions from the Helvar portfolio, primarily based on the DALI standard. These provide comprehensive and seamless control over the building’s entire lighting network, supporting the university’s stringent sustainability goals and guaranteeing reliability in high-demand areas, such as the swimming pool zones.

Key project features and highlights

Versatility for multifunctional zones: The center features a large sports hall that can be configured for volleyball, basketball, tennis, handball, or indoor football. The scalable control system allows for the instant adjustment of lighting parameters and scenes to suit the specific sport and the precise requirements of the users.
Support for diverse specialized facilities: The center houses two swimming pools, including Warsaw’s largest 50-meter, 10-lane Olympic pool, and a 25-meter, 4-lane training pool. Furthermore, the system manages the lighting across nine specialized studios (used for martial arts, fitness, and dance), as well as the gym, bowling alley, and two climbing walls (indoor and outdoor), ensuring optimal visual comfort regardless of the activity.
Sustainability and efficiency: As a project fully committed to sustainable practices, the facility required technologies that minimize energy consumption. Proper lighting management ensures the system operates at peak efficiency, automatically adapting to the real-time demands of all sports and rehabilitation zones.
