Empowering Modern Healthcare: A Hybrid Lighting Solution at Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital

At the renowned Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam, patient wellbeing and staff comfort are paramount. During a recent major renovation, Helvar Benelux supported the hospital team in creating an environment that actively contributes to outstanding care. By educating the facility managers on the benefits of intelligent, people-centric building systems, we helped them implement an adaptable solution that optimises the indoor environment. This seamless upgrade ensures maximum comfort for patients and healthcare professionals alike, whilst supporting the hospital’s journey towards a sustainable, net-zero future.

The Challenge

As modern healthcare environments evolve, building systems must adapt to offer maximum flexibility, comfort, and efficiency. The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam undertook a significant renovation project to upgrade its facilities. The overarching goal was to deploy a highly scalable platform that could be installed quickly, whilst providing comprehensive environmental data to improve both the occupant experience and overall energy efficiency.

The Solution: A Hybrid Approach

The renovation project incorporated three key principles driving modern building design:
1. Hybrid Lighting Control:
The hospital required a system that seamlessly combined wired and wireless technology. Utilising DALI-2 luminaires, the hybrid setup ensures maximum flexibility across the facility’s varied spaces.
2. Wireless Scalability:
To minimise disruption and speed up the installation process, wireless scalability was essential. The solution allowed for quick, out-of-the-box deployment using user-friendly tools. Wireless application controllers form the backbone of this hybrid lighting control system, powered by Node Multisensors that create a robust wireless mesh. Each node connects to up to 16 luminaires and can intelligently learn and self-configure based on space usage.
3. Indoor Environmental Quality Monitoring:
A major focus of the project was improving comfort and energy savings by continuously monitoring space conditions. The environmental sensing solution, Helvar Senses, the sensors installed in the ceiling do significantly more than lighting control. They actively monitor:
Temperature and Humidity
CO₂ and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Light levels and Occupancy
Noise levels

Optimising with Helvar Insights

All the data gathered by the Helvar Senses 3901 Environmental Sensors flows seamlessly through the same wireless mesh network. To manage this information, users monitor the conditions via the Helvar Insights platform – specifically via the Wellbeing Insights module. Helvar Insights transforms complex data into easy-to-understand metrics, providing facility managers with floor plan alerts, graphical visualisations, and comprehensive reports. This level of visibility is crucial for actively optimising both comfort and energy use across the hospital.

The Results

By deploying this advanced hybrid lighting and environmental monitoring system, the client achieved a fast, highly efficient renovation. The Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital has now successfully implemented a future-proofed, scalable platform, taking big steps towards a net-zero future whilst guaranteeing a comfortable environment for patients and staff alike.
