H.C. Andersens Hus – Magical architecture, brought to life by Helvar

In the latest upcoming project, Helvar Partner Vanpee A/S are due to supply a Helvar DALI lighting control system for the new H.C. Andersens Hus in Odense, Denmark, a new and adventurous museum, which stems from the existing buildings around H.C. Andersen’s birth home and memorial hall.

The H.C. Andersens Hus building is a special construction with round pavilions and a sloping ceiling at different angles. The new H.C. Andersen’s House was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and is not just a tribute to H.C. Andersen, but is created as an image of the future society, world and city, with meticulous focus on the application of light, sound, space and scenery. Beauty merges with imagination at the museum, where world-class architecture and spaces bring nature indoors, and provoke visitors to turn things on their head and speculate about today and tomorrow.

The construction consists of a series of circular shapes, which are organized without hierarchy and without an actual center. Green hedges in the garden are arranged in a curved course and reflect parts of the underground structure of exhibition spaces. The round pavilions are cast on site up to nine meters in diameter and will form the framework for the shop, workshop and café.

Great emphasis has been placed on the light in the museum. It is the light that gives the materials life and in the construction, the space is protected by means of fences and wooden screens to make the light softer and warmer. In the original house, the light hits H.C. Andersen’s beautiful table through the small windows, and this effect has been recreated in the museum. Vanpee will supply Digidim 905 and Digidim 910 controllers which will control the light throughout the H.C. Andersen’s House. In addition to controllers, the Vanpee team will also supply sensors, input modules and rail adapters.
