Schools Renovation in Gdynia
More and more cities are committing to sustainable development, driven not only by advancements in technology that enable greener, future-proof environments but also by directives and regulations that promote eco-friendly practices and energy efficiency. This dual push encourages cities to adopt solutions that are sustainable and aligned with environmental goals.
A few years ago, the City of Gdynia launched the Thermo-Modernisation Programme – an initiative that enhances building efficiency with window replacements, heating system upgrades, and modern lighting installations, all aimed at reducing energy consumption and fostering a more eco-friendly environment. An important part of this modernisation initiative was a smart lighting control system.
Helvar has implemented advanced lighting control systems across 11 schools since 2015 in collaboration with our local Partner HC Center, most recently completing work at three locations: the High School of Sports in Gdynia, High School No. II, and School & Pre-school Complex No. 5, significantly reducing energy consumption. Integrating a modern lighting control system into mid-20th-century buildings presented some challenges, primarily due to the unique architectural layouts and existing infrastructure of these older structures.
However, Helvar Imagine system’s scalable architecture supports custom configurations for each space, allowing it to adapt to various room types, from classrooms to corridors, with minimal disruption to the building’s original design.
Modular components implemented onsite, such as the Router 950 (a brain of the system) and Multisensor 321 (motion and light sensor), are designed to integrate easily with existing electrical and lighting infrastructure, regardless of building age or layout. The system’s DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) protocol allows for precise, programmable control of individual lighting fixtures, enabling straightforward installation in older structures without invasive rewiring. Thanks to the complete visualisation of each school floor, with luminaires marked on the plans, it is possible to centrally control the lighting from a single location using a computer.
The Imagine system is designed to meet the EN12464-1 standard, which sets out specific lighting requirements for indoor workspaces, including schools. During the winter months, when many students leave home in the dark and return home after sunset, exposure to bright, high-quality light indoors can help counteract the effects of limited sunlight. This lack of natural light can lead to low energy, difficulty concentrating, and even winter blues.
To support students’ body clocks, especially on dark, sunless days, the lighting at school stimulates the natural brightness of daylight as closely as possible. The system adjusts the light intensity and colour temperature, creating an environment that enhances learning and promotes well-being, providing students with the visual comfort needed to learn effectively and feel at ease.
