Helvar powers Sthlm 01: A sustainable Stockholm landmark

In the heart of Stockholm’s thriving district of Hammarby Sjöstad stands Sthlm 01, a striking 27-storey tower and a new landmark on the city’s skyline. Developed and owned by Skanska, this project was designed with a clear focus on sustainability and future-proofing, goals that culminated in the building achieving the prestigious LEED Platinum certification.
To meet these exacting standards and ensure optimal energy performance and a superior user experience, Skanska partnered with Helvar for the building’s lighting controls.

Energy efficiency meets intelligent control

Achieving LEED Platinum requires meticulous control over energy use, particularly in common areas that operate for extended hours. Helvar’s robust and flexible solutions were specified to manage these vital spaces, including main entrances, reception areas, and elevator halls.
  • Intelligent backbone: The core of the system relies on the Helvar Imagine lighting control system. Helvar Imagine provides the powerful, scalable, and flexible digital backbone necessary to manage different lighting zones seamlessly and serve as the central nervous system for all lighting applications across the building.
  • Maximising savings with smart sensing: To ensure lighting is only active when and where needed, smart sensors are deployed throughout. Critical to achieving LEED criteria is the integration of daylight harvesting functionality. This sophisticated feature automatically adjusts artificial light levels based on the amount of natural light available, driving significant energy savings without any impact on user comfort.
  • Intuitive operation: For facility managers and end-users, ease of control is paramount. Straightforward, stylish user interfaces provide intuitive manual override where necessary, ensuring the system is powerful yet simple to manage.

Data that drives decisions: Helvar Insights

Looking beyond mere control, Sthlm 01 is equipped with Helvar Insights, a powerful cloud-based tool that transforms the building’s lighting infrastructure into a source of valuable, actionable data.
For the building owner, Skanska, Insights provides unparalleled visibility into system status and potential maintenance issues. This allows them to proactively manage the building and ensure long-term, high-performance operation, moving maintenance from reactive to predictive.
In the Helvar office, the system maximises the use of Helvar Insights, including the crucial heat maps functionality. This sophisticated layer of data allows the office management team to analyse how the space is used, understanding peak usage times, underutilised zones, and traffic flow. This information is vital for future space planning, cleaning schedules, and optimising the layout to better support the team’s working styles, ensuring the office remains a highly productive and adaptable workplace.

Helvar’s Stockholm office: A blueprint for wellbeing

Nestled within the high-tech confines of Sthlm 01 is Helvar’s own Stockholm office, a true demonstration of our commitment to employee wellbeing and a powerful showcase of our most advanced technologies in action. The office serves as a live workplace and a dynamic showroom, proving how intelligent lighting can boost productivity and create a vibrant work environment.

Personalisation for peak performance with ActiveAhead

In line with Helvar’s core values, the office prioritises the people who use it. Lighting is not a static utility; it’s a dynamic tool for supporting employee performance and comfort.
  • ActiveAhead: Self-learning and personalised. The main workspace features our Helvar ActiveAhead solution. This wireless, self-learning system adapts to how the space is used over time, continuously optimising the light for maximum efficiency and a superior experience. It provides personal control through the ActiveTune mobile app, allowing employees to instantly and intuitively adjust light levels to perfectly suit their individual needs and the task at hand, supporting concentration and reducing eye strain.
  • Comprehensive control: Like the main building, the office uses the power of Helvar Imagine and smart sensing to ensure baseline efficiency and responsiveness across all areas. Meeting rooms and diverse areas benefit from a range of modern, functional user interfaces, demonstrating a full spectrum of control for any application.

Versatile control with a Hybrid approach

To showcase the ultimate adaptability of intelligent lighting, the office also integrates a hybrid control solution. This is achieved through the Node Link , which seamlessly bridges the gap between the wireless, self-learning ActiveAhead luminaires and traditional wired control systems. This technical flexibility allows the ActiveAhead network to be effortlessly managed not only via the ActiveTune mobile app but also through a fixed, intuitive control panel. This ensures a full spectrum of control options is available, proving that superior performance and personalised lighting can be achieved within any building’s existing infrastructure.

Conclusion: Future-proofing a landmark

Sthlm 01 is more than just a striking architectural landmark; it is a blueprint for the sustainable, intelligent workplace of the future. By choosing Helvar, Skanska ensured that energy efficiency is seamlessly managed by the robust Imagine system, while tenants benefit from advanced, personalised control like ActiveAhead and the operational ease provided by Helvar Insights. This partnership delivers a truly future-proofed building that actively supports the wellbeing of its occupants and stands as a powerful example of intelligent, green design.
