Lõuna-Eesti Hospital

Estonia
Situated next to Kubija Lake and surrounded by a peaceful pine forest, South-Estonian Hospital provides high-standard specialised healthcare services. While the beautiful surroundings undoubtedly contribute to the healing process, patients spend the majority of their time indoors. Lighting plays a crucial role in patients well-being, and the hospital sought to modernise its lighting infrastructure, creating an environment that fosters comfort, recovery, safety, and a sense of calm. Furthermore, with the healthcare sector accounting for around 4.4% of global CO2 emissions, the hospital recognised the importance of implementing energy-efficient, future-proof, and sustainable solutions.
In October 2023, the hospital initiated a lighting control renovation project to replace its aging system. The goal was to implement a solution that could be easily and quickly installed, minimising disruption within the department of surgery where patients awaited admission – and that was a challange. The Helvar Imagine system’s fast installation process, adaptable design, and user-friendly interface minimised disruption during the renovation, reducing downtime to a minimum. Additionally, the centralised management capabilities of Helvar Imagine streamlined the configuration and fine-tuning process, reducing the impact on the hospital’s operations.

Helvar’s lighting control system was also chosen for its ability to prioritise patient safety and well-being through features like intelligent emergency lighting, adaptable lighting scenes for different areas, and seamless integration with the building management system. The right lighting has been proven to decrease average length of stay for patients. Lighting significantly impacts patient recovery in hospitals, specifically, exposure to natural light and well-designed artificial lighting can regulate patients’ circadian rhythms, leading to improved sleep, mood, and potentially faster healing.
We collaborated with Alter Baltics and DeltaE, to bring the hospital’s vision to life. The project involved upgrading the emergency lighting to a DALI-controlled system, enabling automated testing and reporting, and ensuring a swift response in critical situations. General areas were equipped with daylight, and motion-based controls to optimise energy efficiency and create a comfortable ambiance. Operating rooms received specialised attention, with customisable lighting scenes designed to support various surgical procedures.
In line with the project’s vision, the Helvar system seamlessly integrates with the hospital’s Building Management System (BMS), offering a comprehensive and easy-to-use interface. The BMS illustrates the emergency lighting reporting view, showcasing how the system automatically tracks and reports when and which luminaire has passed the test. This functionality also allows for reports to be downloaded into Excel and sent directly to email, eliminating the need for manual report creation.
A standout feature of the project is the integration of motion sensor data with the hospital’s HVAC systems. This approach allows for need-based control, activating HVAC only when rooms are occupied, reducing energy waste, and contributing to a more sustainable environment.
As the final touches are completed on this renovation, South-Estonian Hospital stands not just with brighter spaces, but with a renewed commitment to exceptional care.
