The Avenues Bahrain is an iconic seafront shopping destination, home to a vast array of retail, dining, and entertainment options. The recently completed Phase II extension significantly enhances the retail landscape, introducing new areas for shopping, dining, and leisure, each featuring its own unique architectural character.
To guarantee a consistently high-quality and seamless visitor experience, the project demanded a highly flexible and sophisticated lighting control system. This system needed to effectively manage the diverse lighting requirements across the entire new development.

A scalable and future-proof system for expansion
Helvar, in partnership with our local partner, Triode, was selected to provide the lighting controls for the new phase of The Avenues in Bahrain. A key factor in this decision was Helvar’s proven capability to integrate seamlessly with the existing Phase I lighting system, which was supplied by a different manufacturer.
The project’s primary objective was to deploy a trusted, future-proof lighting control solution that could operate alongside the existing Phase I system while also offering effortless expansion capabilities for any future developments.
Our comprehensive range of lighting control solutions was deployed across the vast new space, including key districts such as The Forum, Grand Plaza, Electra, The Souk, and the extended Grand Avenue. The variety of Helvar products used clearly demonstrates the system’s inherent versatility and scalability.

Intelligent control for a dynamic environment
To ensure precise lighting control and optimise energy usage, a wide range of Helvar products was specified:

Routers 905, 910, 920, and 454 were utilised for DALI and phase dimming control.

SDIM control of external modules was implemented to successfully overcome distance limitations, ensuring flawless operation across the expansive site.

Helvar 498 and 494 units manage the relay control for external and basement parking lights, intelligently responding to daylight and time-based settings.
For localised, on-the-spot adjustments, auxiliary interfaces were installed, allowing staff to manage lighting via local switches in specific areas.
A crucial benefit of the chosen solution is its ease of management. The entire system is monitored and controlled from two locations using Helvar’s sleek ST7 wall-mounted touchscreens and is centrally managed with Helvar software. This central control platform facilitates simple adjustments and monitoring of the complete lighting system, from the new retail districts to the extensive landscape lighting.

Seamless integration and smart automation
Beyond simple lighting control, the Helvar system delivers advanced integration and automation features.
The system was seamlessly integrated with the mall’s BACnet Building Management System (BMS), as well as the fire alarm and central battery systems. This ensures that the lighting operates in perfect harmony with the mall’s other critical infrastructure, meeting all safety and operational standards.
To further boost efficiency, a variety of sensing and automation features were employed:

Programmable movement detection sensors were installed in non-public (non-ID) areas for simple on/off control.

Dimmable movement detection sensors were used in specific public (ID) areas to adjust lighting levels based on real-time occupancy.
Furthermore, the entire mall and its landscape lighting are intelligently managed using daylight, astronomical, and calendar timer controls. This guarantees that the lighting is always perfectly tuned to the time of day and year, as well as the unique requirements of the space.

By delivering powerful integration capabilities and a future-proof design, Helvar and Triode provided a lighting control solution that not only meets the immediate needs of The Avenues’ expansion but also establishes a flexible, scalable, and easy-to-use platform for years to come.
