Green and fit for the future!

Ravelin Sports Centre, located next to the University of Portsmouth Library, is designed to be one of the UK’s most sustainable sports centres. It is the first project of the Universities £400m “10 Year Estate Master Plan”. The design received an ‘Outstanding’ rating from BREEAM UK, the world’s leading sustainability assessment for buildings. With an impressive 11,009 m² worth of space benefiting health and the environment, students, staff, and local residents will all be able to enjoy the facilities to play, train and compete.

The centre will comprise various facilities, including eight court sports halls, 25m eight-lane swimming pools, a fitness suite and multi-purpose studios, squash courts, a ski simulator, a climbing wall, teaching spaces, a café, and an underground car park.
The design includes features to create renewable energy from the roof solar panels and internal heat recovery systems, re-use the pool water for toilet flushing, manage wastewater drainage by creating an urban orchard and have a biodiverse grassed roof with beehives.
Luminaire Manufacturer WILA wanted an Open Protocol Lighting Control Solution and chose Helvar to supply the lighting controls. “The Helvar team have been a great support to WILA on this challenging project. They have provided both professional and timely responses throughout the entire process,” explains Jon Grzbiela, Business Development – Lighting, Controls + IoT, WILA.
The University of Portsmouth were after a sustainable lighting solution that had the ability to create various scenes for multi-use space requirements, a need for integration into the HVAC system and the ability to control the dampers via the Helvar sensors.
“The customer opted for our solution as it is Open Protocol (DALI & Ethernet) and a one-stop solution for complex control requirements. A combination of our 910 and 920 Application Controllers were installed to control the DALI and DMX lighting drivers. Our 320 and 321 Sensors and 444 Mini Input Modules were used for presence and absence detection along with scene control in some areas via our 13 series of control panels,” says Stephen Marley, Sales Manager, Helvar.
The Ravelin Sports Centre also benefits from Helvar Insights, our scalable cloud-based suite of digital services that takes advantage of data gathered from existing lighting control systems, devices and sensors. With Helvar Insights, Ravelin Sports Centre will have 24/7 remote access to be able to understand how the centre is used and how to optimise the space best.
