Aabenraa Hospital
Lighting for Recovery: Patient-Centric Controls at Hospital South Jutland
Hospital South Jutland (Sygehus Sønderjylland) in Aabenraa underwent a massive transformation, expanding from 25,600 to 80,000 square metres to become a state-of-the-art acute care facility. Officially inaugurated by HRH The Crown Prince of Denmark, the new six-storey extension was designed with a core focus on patient wellbeing and recovery. This dedication to architectural and operational excellence led to the facility being named Nohrcon’s ‘Healthcare Building of the Year 2020’.

Enhancing the Patient Experience
Understanding that light plays a critical role in healing, the hospital is equipped with an advanced Helvar Imagine DALI lighting control system. The facility features bright, private patient rooms outfitted with intuitive push-button panels. This empowers patients to easily adjust their own lighting intensity, giving them a sense of control over their personal comfort and resting environment.
To further support recovery and ensure restful nights, the intelligent lighting utilises customised, automated scenarios. A dedicated ‘Night Mode’ ensures that if staff enter a room during the night, the lights only illuminate to a soft, low level, avoiding sudden, bright disruptions for sleeping patients.

Seamless Automation and Efficiency
In bustling clinical areas and corridors, the lighting dynamically adapts to the people within the space. Areas utilise daylight harvesting to maintain a natural, energising environment, while Helvar PIR sensors ensure that lights automatically turn on when medical staff enter a room, and switch off when the space is vacated.
Beyond individual comfort, the Helvar lighting network is deeply integrated into the hospital’s broader Building Management System (BMS) via a Helvar Tridium driver. This smart building integration allows facility managers to effortlessly monitor and control lighting alongside ventilation and heating. By actively adapting the indoor climate to user behaviour, the hospital achieves substantial energy savings without ever compromising on patient care.
The Technical Backbone
Powered by robust Helvar 905 and 910 Application Controllers, the system provides a resilient, scalable infrastructure essential for a critical healthcare environment. The complete lighting control solution was supplied and commissioned by Vanpee A/S, helping to deliver a truly modern, human-centric environment for Hospital South Jutland.
