Designed for Care: Lighting Innovation at Parkhead Hub

Situated in the East End of Glasgow, Parkhead Hub is NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s first net zero-in-operation facility, setting a new benchmark for sustainable, community-focused care. The project recently won ‘Project of the Year – New Build (UK)’ at the 2025 Design in Mental Health Awards, recognised for its outstanding design and contribution to mental health care. It also won the ‘Public Sector Project of the Year’ at the RICS UK Grand Final awards in October 2025, recognised for transforming service delivery in the Glasgow area.
Helvar’s lighting control solution plays a central role in delivering the right light at the right time, while giving staff and patients an environment that feels calm and intuitive.
Designed for Flexibility, Built for Wellbeing
Our solutions enable seamless control across a wide range of spaces, including consultation rooms, receptions, waiting areas, staff offices, admin areas, toilets, stairwells, the atrium, and internal courtyards. The lighting adapts seamlessly, responding to how each space is used, the time of day, and the natural light coming in.
Whether it’s helping patients feel at ease in consultation rooms, creating a welcoming atmosphere in waiting areas, or keeping stairwells and toilets well-lit and safe, the lighting controls work quietly in the background to support every space. Users can make changes with simple interfaces or let the system do the work automatically, adjusting in real time for comfort and performance.
Lighting Control Solution
At the core of Parkhead Hub’s lighting system is Helvar’s Imagine solution delivering scalable, intelligent control across the different spaces with a comprehensive suite of DALI-2 certified devices and seamless integration capabilities.
“Lighting was a key part of Parkhead Hub’s design. It needed to promote wellbeing while also meeting technical and integration demands,” says Sean Bunton, Sales Specification Manager – Scotland at Helvar. “Our solution gave the flexibility to tailor lighting control in every space, supporting patient comfort, staff usability, and energy efficiency. We’re proud to be part of such a meaningful project, where thoughtful design and technology come together to enhance care.”
The lighting control solution includes:
28x 950 DALI-2 Application Controllers for scalable, multi-zone control
321D2 multisensors and 320D2 PIR sensors for presence and daylight detection
135D2 switch modules and scene plates for local, intuitive control
444D2 input units to connect third-party devices
436 BACnet Gateway for smooth integration with the wider BMS
Helvar Cloud Gateway (HCG Gen 2) connected to Helvar Insights for data and system optimisation
Designed with flexibility in mind, the system can be easily updated as the building’s needs change. Helvar Insights adds another layer of control, enabling remote monitoring and ongoing optimisation.
Client Testimonial

“The level of service Helvar provides is consistently excellent, spanning from pre-construction to post-handover aftercare. During the pre-construction phase, the team is proactive and engaging, ensuring the design runs smoothly, with technical submissions and drawing releases always delivered on time. The product quality itself is high, and we’ve appreciated the low lead times during the build phase. Furthermore, the commissioning engineers are competent and helpful, and the post-handover team is always quick to assist with any minor issues raised by the client.

We would absolutely use Helvar on future projects. They provide an overall good service and act as a reliable partner throughout the entire project delivery process.” – Stuart Clarkson, Project Manager at FES Limited.
