The Dock at The Gramophone Works

London, United Kingdom

The DockSet in the heart of West London, The Dock at The Gramophone Works provides 64,132 sq ft of reimagined workspace. The project is a refurbishment and extension of the original 20th century Old Gramophone Works building. The new development offers state-of-the-art, high-quality office space set over six floors. The Old Gramophone Works has been significantly altered internally and sustainably built to provide inspiring, fresh and contemporary office environments and provides some of the greenest credentials of any workspace in London.
“With its rich musical heritage, the original 20th Century building was a goldmine for design inspiration. Old soundproofing discovered in the basement became key to the brand identity. Exploring these anechoic shapes led to our dynamic prism logo, which not only reinforced the building’s creative history but resembled its unique architecture as well. Wanting to resonate with modern, creative businesses we paired the identity with a bold, graphic execution which helped to bring the brand into the 21st Century”, explains Sophie Harris, Director, Effection.

The DockAs well as impressive offices with multiple terraces overlooking the Grand Union Canal, The Dock is home to a canal-side terraced cafe and an unforgettable large communal reception that can double as an event space.
The Dock is targeting to achieve a prestigious BREEAM Excellent rating. The building has been designed with sustainability in mind and features a green roof, solar shading, an innovative expressed timber structure and exposed concrete columns to create a unique interior. “This is a fantastic project for Helvar to be a part of; sustainability is a key area for us, and we are proud to be associated with projects that share our sustainability goals”, expresses Michael Kelsey, Sales Manager, Helvar.
The lighting design has been carried out following BCO guidelines and the principles of the CIBSE Lighting Guides. “The lighting design plays a vital role in reinforcing the brand identity” explains Sophie. Office areas are illuminated by low energy LED lighting with sensors. Helvar’s programmable system controls the lighting, enabling the layout to be easily reconfigured for partitioning works without significant alterations.
The DockHelvar 910 Routers have been installed on each floor using 315 iDim Sense system sensors integrated into the linear fitting for presence detection and daylight harvesting. “Presence detectors help reduce energy consumption by automatically turning off lighting that is needlessly left on — it is an excellent method of saving energy along with harvesting natural daylight”, explains Michael.
The installation provides The Dock with complete flexibility — the system is easily expandable, adding more Routers to the TCP/IP network if needed when the project goes to CAT-B fit out stage.
