Helvar’s Magnum Opus:
Setting the mood on world’s biggest big entertainment cruiser
Introducing the Symphony of the Seas
The Royal Caribbean’s MS Symphony of the Seas is the largest ever passenger ship to be constructed by gross tonnage (228,081). Measuring 1,188 (362m) feet in length she is about five times the size of the infamous Titanic. The vessel can accommodate up to 6,680 passengers at maximum capacity in addition to a 2,200 person crew. In terms of length alone, if the Symphony on the Seas were balanced on its stern it would rise higher than all but two of the tallest buildings in Europe.
Wärtsilä FUNA, Helvar’s marine partner, won the project to deliver all lighting design and lighting integration. “We have been working with Helvar for 26 years now and delivered multiple large-scale cruise ships. The Symphony of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world today and decision to use Helvar lighting controls was an easy one – they are our trusted partner. Large scale projects like these require close collaboration and high quality, that’s where Helvar fits in,” says Andreas Köhler from Helvar marine partner Wärtsilä FUNA. The lighting design was provided by Mr. Richard Dixon from Project International Ltd.
Designed with luxury and entertainment in mind, the ship’s facilities include a park containing more than 20,000 tropical plants, a children’s water park, the world’s tallest waterside at sea 40 bars and restaurants, 2 rock climbing walls, 2 theatres of West End proportions, a basketball court, a gym, a casino and a mini golf course.
Key Challenge
The Symphony of the Seas offers a range of different settings and experiences for guests in its seven neighbourhoods, each designed with unique features to suit different moods and appetites.
As such a lighting system had to be able to deliver a sophisticated integrated solution to adapt to the varied lighting needs of a vessel of such vast proportions. The system needed to integrate the massive amounts of light sources and lighting control products into one seamless control system.
Key Solution
The vast lighting system was installed to alter the interior and exterior moods in line with the varied themes of neighbourhoods and decks.
The system integrated state of the art dimming solutions including 80 Digidim dimmers, 270 4-Ch. Ballast Controllers, dimmers for 49 suites, 120 8-Ch. Relay Unit, 36 Imagine Routers, 40 8 Scene Lighting Control Panels, and 72 4 Scene Lighting Control Panels.
