SerbiaThe fact that the Airport City Business Complex in Belgrade is the first and largest business park in Serbia sets an expectation for future-thinking, innovative, and people-focused solutions. Among 150,000 square meters of restaurants, health clinics, banks, and a variety of other services, there’s an office of our client – a renowned gaming company – Wargaming. They sought to create a work environment that fostered both strategic thinking and employee comfort.
While the initial lighting design met the basic requirements, the occupants soon realised they needed a more nuanced approach to illumination. This is where Helvar’s ActiveAhead solution stepped onto the battlefield, in collaboration with our local Partner IBF.
The Wargaming office occupies six floors, each filled with workstations. The existing ON/OFF lighting system, while functional, was too inflexible for the needs of the workforce. Employees found the overhead lighting at their workstations too harsh, negatively impacting concentration and productivity. The client wanted a solution that allowed for personalised dimming without the need for costly rewiring.
Our ActiveAhead wireless lighting control system, combined with the ActiveTune app, offered the perfect solution. ActiveAhead nodes could be seamlessly integrated into the existing luminaires, transforming them into smart, dimmable fixtures. Employees could then use the ActiveTune app on their smartphones to adjust the lighting levels above their desks. First, they scan a QR code placed at their desks and then connect to the ActiveTune App. They can also save specific luminaires and settings for quick access.
Employees now have the power to personalise their lighting, creating a more comfortable and productive workspace. The ActiveTune app’s intuitive interface made it easy for everyone to adjust the lighting to their preferences.
The main challenge laid in finding compatible DALI drivers to replace the factory-installed ones. However, Helvar’s extensive portfolio of DALI drivers provided the answer. The Helvar drivers integrated perfectly with the ActiveAhead nodes, ensuring smooth communication and control.
Beyond the benefits of personalised lighting, ActiveAhead also contributes to significant energy savings. By automatically dimming lights when spaces are not in use, the system reduces energy wastage. Precise data on energy savings is still being collected, but early indications suggest a substantial reduction. This not only benefits the client’s bottom line but also contributes to a greener future.

Our main goal when considering dimming options was to avoid any additional cabling, which would have been complicated in our situation and required construction work. That’s one of the main reasons we chose Helvar’s wireless system. The Wargaming Office project is an example of the power of adaptive lighting. Just like in a successful war game, the right strategy led to victory, and in this case, the victory was a workspace that truly empowers its occupants.
