Home to over five-million books, the People’s Library in Ankara is a must-see spectacle in Turkey. The library was built upon 125,000m2 of land in Turkey’s cosmopolitan capital – completed and officially inaugurated in 2020. Proudly serving as a prominent learning environment, a historical archive and a museum, the site boasts the reputation of being the largest library in Turkey.
The People’s Library is referred to as ‘The Millet’s Library’. ‘Millet’ is Turkish for both ‘nation’, and for a ‘group of people who share a common interest’ – an apt term, since this prestigious location was built to share knowledge between millions of people.
Featuring a blend of Ottoman, Selcuk and modern architectural design elements, the library is one-of-a-kind. The World Hall is the main central atrium, fitted with a large stone globe and housing over 200,00 books. The softly lit dome peaks at 32 meters high, and is circled by 16 striking marble columns, which represent the 16 Turkish states, and create a feeling of unforgettable grandeur.
