Bringing lighting intelligence to the heart of Tampere

Nokia Arena is an indoor sports arena with 15,000 seats in the city of Tampere, Finland, hosting ice hockey games and large cultural events— including the 2022 Men’s World Championship! The size of the Arena and surrounding developments are significant on a Nordic and even European level; at the peak of the construction, there were 700 workers working on the project!

Project overview
Nokia Arena is a high-profile building with two Ice Hockey World Championships in a row being organised there, as well as NHL games, and concerts from high-profile international artists. The building is central in Tampere city and defines the whole centre area as it’s the largest indoor event floor in Finland for concerts and sporting events.
Nokia Arena benefits from a versatile, cloud-connected and energy-efficient lighting control system. A DALI system is used in all common areas, retail spaces, restaurants, VIP boxes and hallways throughout the Arena, excluding the ice rink. The project consists of 46 routers (44x 910 routers , 2x 920 routers) and Helvar Insights is connected to the whole system, providing intelligent insights that improve the efficiency of the arena and lower maintenance costs through remote access.
An open protocol was required to ensure longevity, interoperability and flexibility for future upgrades. DALI provides superior functionality and versatility with the ability to centrally program and control all areas.
DALI systems also provide scene-setting control and maximise energy efficiency by adjusting lighting levels in real-time to occupancy and daylight detection. The system was designed to be easily scalable, and efficiently reconfigured and adapted.
Helvar Insights monitors the operational status of every DALI lamp and driver, and notifies of any faults in real time, meaning less time is spent on investigation, so errors can either be fixed remotely or with limited time spent on site, helping to maximise the operational productivity of the Nokia Arena.
